Chiavari

The coastline of Riviera di Levante boasts an extraordinary series of towns with a number of points of interest often overlooked by normal tourist offerings. Chiavari is a perfect example and is well known for its rich ambience and calendar, starting with the Mercatino dell'Antiquariato, the monthly antiques market. Its richness is also demonstrated by the stark elegance of its churches and public buildings, from the cathedral, formerly the sanctuary of Nostra Signora dell’Orto, to Palazzo Rocca, a residence dating back to the 17th/18th century and now housing the Archaeological Museum and Civic Art Gallery. Tourism has flourished over the past century, leading to growth but without the urban sprawl seen elsewhere. In fact, the town boasts a charming array of villas and smaller residences built in an eclectic style in the 19th and 20th centuries, and often surrounded by beautiful gardens. And along the way, visitors have the chance to discover thousands of opportunities to try the area’s typical products, ranging from corzetti, a type of pasta with an inimitable form, to cheese from the upper valley, which can be found in the square at the Mercatino dei Sapori di Chiavari, held at the end of every month.

Historic house

The Antica Casa Gotuzzo was built in 1652 but subsequently underwent numerous modifications. For example, the windows facing the sea were walled up in 1921 when rough seas knocked them out; the windows were reopened in the Seventies. And the slate slabs that held the vats used to store oil, wine and grain are still below the street level.

The Gotuzzo family was from Portofino and chose Chiavari and the Scogli district for their shipyards, from which over 120 sailing ships were launched. The house suffered extensive damage during the Second World War and in 1945 it was completely cleared out by the Germans, who left it roofless. It was rebuilt in 1948, despite the risk posed by heavy seas.

To commemorate the extraordinary maritime history that has been part of this house for centuries, the four apartments open to our guests have been named  “ GOLETTA, BRIGANTINO and CLIPPER
